A bigger issue is that we couldn't get the connected apps-Starlink, Aha, and Pandora-to work at all. There are some issues, like the lack of an Audio Source button on the home screen, and that the capacitive buttons can be difficult to manipulate at a glance, but these are easy to get used to. In addition, several screens let you rearrange icons according to your preference. The 7-inch touch screen and its large icons-along with six capactive touch buttons around the screen-make the interface easy to use. There's a separate app for Pandora Internet Radio, and the system has individual apps for weather, fuel, sports, and stock info via Sirius TravelLink. The Aha Radio app adds streaming music, news, and podcasts, as well as local search capability to find food, fuel, and other services in an area. The required gateway app provides news, weather, and a music player function, as well as apps for iHeartRadio and Stitcher. The StarLink 7-inch Multimedia Navigation system offers some of the most comprehensive connectivity we've seen, most of it via a connected smartphone.

With the $3,090 EyeSight option package and a destination charge of $850, the final sticker came to $34,635. The 2.5i Limited we tested has a base price of $30,395. The 2016 Subaru Outback comes in four trim levels, starting with the entry-level Outback 2.5i at $24,995, and ending with the top-of-the-line Outback 3.6R, the only model with a six-cylinder engine. And although we've tested the StarLink infotainment system in several other Subarus and know its qualities and quirks quite well, connectivity was problematic in the Outback. That said, our test car had disappointing acceleration and rough road manners. Otherwise, the 2016 Outback still offers standard all-wheel drive, diverse in-dash connectivity, and comprehensive and convenient driver assists. These include the addition of automatic crash notification and stolen vehicle recovery to the StarLink telematics system, and lane departure prevention to the EyeSight suite of driver assists, as well as retuned steering and shocks. The Subaru Outback was redesigned for the 2015 model year ($34,135.00 at Truecar) (Opens in a new window), so for 2016 it gets only a few tech upgrades and performance tweaks. Inconsistent infotainment connectivity in testing.
